Project Management>When things go wrong with your Project


Almost every Project has a crisis point at some time when something can go wrong.  "Events" happen and the Project Manager is expected to sort them out. Every event is usually different, but a generic approach for dealing with them can still be used.  The key areas are:


Investigate and carry out Analysis

  • Determine the cause and nature of the problem, i.e. does it require an immediate fix or is it a procedural problem
  • Establish if there are any other alternatives for dealing with the problem.  Assess the alternatives and decide on the best course of action or consult with the project sponsor to agree the best option 
  • If the problem is very serious, you may have to consider implementing the Contingency Plan (if you have one – if not discuss the issue with the Project Sponsor and if required, produce a plan)


  • Inform the Project Sponsor or Project Team and the affected stakeholders of what has gone wrong. Advise them of what you intend to do and the possible effect on the Project's timing, any costs and quality implications
  • Agree the next course of action to be taken. And most importantly, identify and implement measures to prevent it from happening again. Also to avoid the same mistakes for future projects, record details in a lessons learned register.


  • Amend the Project plan to take into account the agreed solution (record the decision in a Decision’s Register)
