How to stay on target with your Project - A brief introduction to managing your project

Now you have planned your Project you now need to manage the project's progress and not let all your efforts go to waste. 

The things you can do to help the project reach a successful end is to:

  • Closely monitor the project’s progress and monitor the quality of the work done
  • Keep the lid on unnecessary changes to your project
  • Actively manage the risks you have identified that could impact your project
  • Regularly review everything - plans, risks, assumptions, constraints, issues to ensure you are staying on target
  • Look after your team and keep them informed.  Communication is key to ensure all activities are carried out and everything is delivered on time.  Also to ensure that everyone has the same perception as to what is to be delivered as well as when
  • Stay in touch with the key people - Stakeholders, the Project Team and the Project Board. Create a communications plan (planning what information should be sent to whom and when. Which should include planned announcements to the business). Agree and include when updates, announcements and project progress reports should be issued and stick to the plan.

You might want to have the Project independently reviewed or Health Checked. Particularly if there has been significant changes or if you have any particular concerns. Some companies set up a project support team to carry out this function but this is not always necessary it depends on the size or how significant the project is.


To sum up, the key to keeping your project on target is therefore, to continually check and monitor the progress of your project against your project plan. And keep interested parties informed of progress.
